Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) is a minimally invasive medical procedure to treat a condition called aortic stenosis. This condition occurs when the aortic valve in the heart becomes narrow and doesn’t open properly, making it hard for blood to flow from the heart to the rest of the body which can lead to symptoms like chest pain, fatigue, and shortness of breath and dizziness.
How Does TAVI Work?
In tradition heart valve surgery, chest is opened to replace the valve. TAVI is different as it doesn’t involve major surgery. Instead of opening the chest, here doctors use a thin tube called a catheter to insert the new valve. which is inserted through a small cut, usually in the groin or a small cut in the chest. Once in place, the new valve is expanded to replace the damaged one, allowing blood to flow properly again.
Who Can Benefit from TAVI?
TAVI is often used for people who are aged above 60 and are too weak for open heart surgery.
